Featuring bouquets from her personal home altar and phone photography of local parks where she would often meditate, Xaviera adorns herself with representations of Earth’s natural beauty in respect to the very first altars her ancestors would have revered. In a collaborative process, Xaviera and Perla come together to create a self portrait inspired by the visual language of reclining nudes, the Birth of Venus, and the Madonna and Child. Xaviera poses as if for an editorial, crystallized within iridescent acrylic, cradling herself as a baby in her arms. This work in particular calls forth the Yorùbá deity Oshun with honey colored hair and fabric. As the mother of the art of divination, Oshun herself claims the head and hair as sacred. Xaviera grew up in the salon owned and operated by her grandmother which would later inspire her to explore everything beauty has to offer; from wigs, to makeup, and femininity. With both featured artists being from the Dominican Republic, the river of hair is interlaced with subtle eyeballs peering from within the curls interlacing generational legacies with one another. Calling upon both water and fire, the ancestral memory cultivated between the two artists transcends their lived experiences as queer Afro-Caribbeans.
